DIY Restored Dining Room Hutch

Buying big furniture pieces can be very expensive, which stinks because these big furniture pieces are what fills a home up! There are ways to work around this though, and that is to find old furniture from thrift stores or garage sales, and refinish them! I had been looking for a hutch for our dining room for a while, and a best friend of mine came upon this hutch on Facebook Marketplace one day for free! I jumped on it, and with a few easy steps, I was able to take it from drab and worn out, to modern and a great statement piece.

 

Step 1: Find budget-friendly furniture at a Goodwill, garage sale, or Facebook Marketplace and buy supplies |

Brand new furniture can be expensive, and although it is convenient, buying used furniture and revamping it saves so much money and allows you to be creative! Facebook Marketplace, Goodwill, and even garage sales will have highly discounted furniture that can easily be restored.

 

This hutch was found on Facebook Marketplace for free and I immediately knew I could restore it and make it the perfect wine hutch for my dining room.

 

Step 2: Remove all doors and hardware |

After we found the hutch, we removed all the doors, glass windows, glass shelves, and hardware. We had to break this project up into a few weeks because we wanted to make sure everything was done perfectly!

 

Step 3: Clean Hardware |

The hardware was super dirty and had a dingy hue of gold. We cleaned it with a mixture of |vinegar, white flour, and salt|. The hardware sat for 12 hours and then it was cleaned off with a cloth. It was important to make sure that the flour and vinegar were completely off and the hardware was dry. I could not believe how good this cleaned it. The gold was sparkling!

Step 4: Sand all pieces |

Sanding all of the pieces took the longest time out of this whole project. We initially used sandpaper but it was not working well because the hutch was made of laminate wood. We ended up using a handheld sander with 60 grit, which got through the laminate.

 

Step 5: Prime all pieces |

For both the priming and the painting of the hutch we used a Sprayit SP-33000 LVLP gravity feed spray gun from Home Depot. We already had an air compressor to hook it up with. It needs to be at least an 8-gallon air compressor. We initially began priming with a hand brush, but the strokes were not coming out clean and we did not want this piece to have odd strokes on it. The spray gun and compressor are so worth it for projects like this.

For the primer, we used Zinsser Smart Prime. We use this primer for all of our projects because it has the best coverage.

 

Step 6: Paint all pieces |

When it came to painting, I wanted to go dark to offset all the white that is in our home. This green color, called Bavarian Forest by Sherwin Williams was the perfect color! Two coats covered this hutch perfectly. The color came out gorgeous and looked great with the gold hardware.

Step 7: Place in the desired room and add decor |

This hutch was perfect for our dining room. We are wine lovers so this is our wine hutch lol! It holds all of our wine glasses, wine, and champagne bottles.
