How to Style a Modern Farmhouse Fireplace

Nothing beats waking up on a snowy Minnesota morning to the smell of coffee brewing, HGTV airing a repeat of Good Bones, and the warm air from the roaring fireplace keeping the room cozy. In my house, this is our go-to comfort spot! There are FIVE key pieces I focus on when styling a modern farmhouse fireplace:

1. Color Inspiration

2. Greenery

3. Big Baskets

4. Symmetry

5. Minimal Items

1. Color Inspiration | Areas in the home that have a fireplace give off a warm and inviting vibe, so it is important that the decor chosen reflects that vibe! The neutral spectrum of the medium stained wood mantel, matte black surround, and white shiplap needed magnolia greens and soft gray and blue colors to bring in the warm and inviting vibe. You can choose any colors to give off the vibe you are trying to set! A mustard yellow or a peach would look great in this spot too!

2. Greenery | All spaces need some greenery! When choosing a statement greenery piece for a fireplace, a wreath is my go-to! I love the lush leaves in this magnolia wreath, but any lush wreath would look great in this space. You do not even need to have a window there to accent the wreath, but simply hang the wreath above the mantel, or add a wooden crate to hang the wreath on!

3. Big Baskets | Baskets and crates are great pieces to surround the fireplace. I chose a big basket to be the shade as the mantel, to keep the browns the same and not offset each other. This basket is hiding one of our speakers for our TV. I came home one day to a massive speaker on the ground and knew I had to hide it! Add a pillow and a blanket and no one would even know it was there!

4. Symmetry | Fireplace mantels and the area surrounding a fireplace do not need to be symmetric, but definitely can be if that is the look you prefer! In this area, the symmetry on the mantel brings about a softness to the room, but the bottom did not necessarily need to be symmetrical. I love the clear vases here with sprigs of greens to accent the chippy white window!

5. Minimal Items | Since our TV is on the left of the fireplace, I wanted to make sure that whatever I used to decorate the fireplace was not distracting while watching TV. I also like the simplicity of it. Too much decor causes busyness and distracts from the soft vibe you are wanting to portray. Minimal and simple is the way to go! Plus, it is easier on the budget, which is great!
